Parks and Recreation Commissions are advisory bodies that guide local governments on parks, facilities, and programs, focusing on planning, policy, and community needs by reviewing budgets, recommending improvements, overseeing programs, and promoting public engagement for parks, trails, recreation activities, and open spaces. Their main duties involve advising city councils, creating master plans, reviewing capital projects, and ensuring services meet community needs for health and recreation. 
Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Advisory Role: Advise the City Council/Manager on parks, recreation needs, facilities, programs, and funding.
  • Planning & Policy: Develop and update parks & recreation master plans, recommend policies, and define objectives for public spaces.
  • Program Oversight: Review and recommend improvements for recreation programs, activities, and fee structures.
  • Facility Management: Advise on development, maintenance, supervision, and rules for parks, trails, and greenways.
  • Community Engagement: Promote public interest, organize events, recruit volunteers, and gather community feedback on needs.
  • Financial Oversight: Review financial aspects, consider fundraising, and advise on the use of park improvement funds.
  • Reporting: Prepare annual reports for the City Council on accomplishments and future goals.
